Scholarly Publishing: Scholarly Impact

Introduction

Discovering and understanding one's research impact can be a complex endeavor.  This guide’s goal is to help faculty members applying for promotion and tenure to make the case for excellence in scholarship by using tools such as citation analysis, journal metrics, and other methods.  Those who are just starting to publish can also benefit by using these tools to develop effective publishing strategies.

Resources in This Guide

Journal Metrics explains how to gauge the impact of individual journals and compare them to others in their discipline using journal metric tools.

Author Metrics includes tools to show the influence and productivity of an author/researcher.

Citation Metrics includes guides for completing cited reference searches on many databases and websites available through the UI Libraries, illustrating the number of times an author or published work has been cited.

Altmetrics is a new means of measuring a scholar's impact based on their presence in the social web using online tools and environments.

Where to Publish provides information to help determine journals in which to publish and which journals to avoid.
