In DBH 9000, you learned how to use Health Services Research Projects in Progress database (HSRProj), an NLM database of current research projects, to validate a research idea or identify gaps.  Now there's a competition that asks you to expand on that same idea!

AcademyHealth is proud to announce the third annual HSRProj Research Competition for Students hosted by AcademyHealth and the National Information Center for Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). This annual competition invites students to use data from the Health Services Research Projects in Progress (HSRProj) database in conjunction with other sources to identify research gaps in health services and systems research.

Part of the submission requirements is to develop a research statement that outlines a topic related to population health and/or social determinants of health that is missing or under-represented in the field of health services or systems research as a whole.

Now doesn't that sound like what you are doing in DBH 9012 this term?

You may feel that you're not quite ready for a competition like this one, especially since it requires that you produce research results.  The competition, however, is an annual one.  Why not keep this in mind as you work on your projects for DBH 9012, and think ahead to your Culminating Project.  How could you use the requirements of this competition to inform your own research and enhance the process of developing your own Culminating Project?

Even if you're light years away from your Culminating Project, you will find the resources that are recommended applicants consult to be worth a look.  File those away for use in DBH 9012 and in any course that asks you to consult health data and statistics to justify a need.  And if you haven't taken DBH 9000 yet, this competition is one that could be used for DBH 9000's course project, which is to locate a competition or conference and propose a poster session for it.

Here's a helpful video by the CORE Library on how to search HSR Proj to identify current research projects or note gaps in research.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek out university librarians for advice on your project.  The CORE Library is ready and willing to assist with this competition or any research needs that you might have.
